kasumi ishi – Golden Mist & Stones ｰ 霞石

1980〜1990年代頃に京都で織られたと推定される西陣織の帯を用いて制作しました。横に流れる霞文様は、平安時代の絵巻物にも多く描かれる雅なモチーフで、時の移ろいや遠景を象徴します。これに組み合わされた石畳文は、安定・長寿・繁栄を意味する伝統的な吉祥文様です。背景には、日本の装飾技法「砂子（すなご）」を思わせるきらめきが散りばめられています。
また、この帯の大きな特徴は、金色のタイルのように並ぶ石畳文様です。和紙に金箔を引いて細く裁断した箔糸（引箔）を、模様部分にのみ緯糸として織り込むことで表現されています。打ち込み密度や織組織の切り替えによって、光の角度に応じてきらめきが変化し、立体感のある表情を生み出します。古典的な文様をモダンかつ抽象的に構成した全通柄は、この時代の帯の中でも極めて希少で、日本の職人技と美意識が凝縮された一枚です。

This artwork was created using a Nishijin-ori obi, estimated to have been woven in Kyoto during the 1980s–1990s.
The flowing kasumi (mist) motif, often depicted in Heian-period picture scrolls, symbolizes the passage of time and distant landscapes. Combined with the stone-paving (ishidatami) pattern, a traditional auspicious motif representing stability, longevity, and prosperity, the design embodies both elegance and meaning. The background is adorned with a glittering effect reminiscent of the Japanese decorative technique sunago, where gold dust is delicately scattered.

One of the most striking features of this obi is the gold, tile-like ishidatami pattern. It is expressed through hikibaku (cut gold foil threads), created by applying gold leaf to Japanese paper, cutting it into fine strips, and weaving it only into the patterned sections as weft threads. By varying the weave density and structure, the artisans achieved a play of light that shifts with the viewing angle, giving the design a three-dimensional brilliance.

This all-over design (zentsū-gara) reinterprets classical motifs in a modern, abstract composition. Exceptionally rare among the obi of its era, it is a masterful work that encapsulates the craftsmanship and refined aesthetics of Japan.
