江戸から京都へと続く東海道。浮世絵師・歌川広重の『東海道五十三次』は、その宿場や旅人たちの姿、移りゆく季節や天候を描き、当時の人々にまだ見ぬ土地への憧れを届けた名所絵でした。
本作は、その『東海道五十三次』の意匠をもとにデザインされたとみられる帯で制作しました。
橋を行き交う人々、海辺に浮かぶ船、街道沿いの風景。
帯の中には、江戸から京へ向かう旅の情景が、織りならではの柔らかな色彩と質感で表現されています。
帯の制作年代は1970〜1980年代頃と推定されます。
作品名の「東海道浪漫」には、江戸時代を生きた人々が抱いた旅への憧れと、日本の風景をめぐる物語への想いを込めました。

江戸時代の江戸（日本橋）と京都（三条大橋）を結ぶ約500kmの東海道に設けられた53の宿場のことで、出発地と到着地を合わせて全55枚の作品としても知られています。
The Tōkaidō was the historic route connecting Edo and Kyoto. The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, created by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, depicted the post towns along the route, the travelers who passed through them, and the changing seasons and weather—evoking in people of the Edo period a longing for distant places they had yet to see.
This artwork is created from an obi that is believed to have been designed based on imagery from Hiroshige’s The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō.
People crossing bridges, boats floating along the coast, and scenes unfolding beside the highway—the obi captures the atmosphere of a journey from Edo to Kyoto through the soft colors and distinctive textures of woven textile.
The obi is estimated to date from around the 1970s–1980s.
The title, Tōkaidō Romance, expresses the sense of wonder and longing for travel felt by people of the Edo period, as well as our fascination with the stories woven through the landscapes of Japan.
About the Tōkaidō and its 53 Stations
The Tōkaidō was an approximately 500-kilometer route connecting Edo (Nihonbashi) and Kyoto (Sanjō Ōhashi) during the Edo period. Along the route were 53 post towns where travelers could rest and stay. Hiroshige’s celebrated series consists of 55 prints in total, including the starting point at Nihonbashi and the final destination in Kyoto.
